Once there was a secret brotherhood of humans, rumored to have extraordinary powers. Protected within the walls of their monastery, few had known about them. Then, one night, it happened.
In the middle of the night, two little children were walking home. Some way back, there was a shadow closing in on them. All of the sudden, the robber sneaking up behind them stopped in wonder. The children, just ten feet away from him, had suddenly disappeared.
"That was a bad choice,"
a smooth voice whispered next to his ear.
The boy woke up. What was that noise he had just heard? He rolled out of his bed, got dressed, and walked to the edge of the village, then along the road. He stumbled on something that looked like a finger."Interesting," he thought. He picked it up and put it in his pocket. Lost in thought, he kept walking along the road. Suddenly, he was grasped from behind, too fast for him to even scream. He was held up by his shirt, and a raspy voice, accompanied by stinky, hot breath blown in his ear, laughed quietly and said,
“Stupid little boy. You humans never learn."
As the boy glanced over his shoulder, he realized who, or rather what, was talking to him. It looked like a giant wolf, standing upright, over nine feet tall, and bulging with muscles. Behind him also stood about twenty to thirty wolves, drool hanging from the corner of their mouths, all armed with spears and swords.
"I shall devour you, little fool,"
the giant werewolf chuckled.
Just as he opened his mouth to take a bite out of the young boy, he screamed out in pain. Sticking from his back was a silver dagger. In rage, the werewolf dropped the boy and ripped the dagger out of his flesh, spinning around in one fluid motion. He was pushed back by a sudden gust of wind.
Looking up, he could see a dark form with giant, torn wings, hovering just above the tree tops. A sudden flash. More screams. As the giant werewolf fell over backwards, four more figures leapt over his body. Howling, the remaining werewolves drew their weapons and rushed at the figures. The boy, forgotten in the struggle, rolled to the side under a bush.
Many more screams and grunting noises could be heard. Then, dead silence.
The boy started trembling. A gloved hand pushed away the bushes over him.
"Don"t worry."
The deep voice made the air tremble with power, but it wasn't scary like that of the wolf. It was soothing, but full of authority. The boy looked up. Hovering in the darkness above him was a pale face, contrasting with its black eyes. The face smiled now, the lips parting, revealing the creature's teeth. The boy jerked back. The creature smiled again. "I know these fangs scare you.
"Don't worry. We won't harm you."
The creature stood up. Out of its long coat it drew a pointed silver knife. The boys eyes widened in horror. The creature laughed quietly.
"No, this is a gift."
It knelt down and put the dagger in the boy's hand.
"Don't lose this; it will save your life one day. It will warn of danger."
The other figures slowly withdrew into the trees, but the tall creature remained for a moment. It looked back at the boy and said,
"When you're ready, come looking for me. Trust your heart and you will find me."
Then, it spread its dark wings, and with a gust of wind, took of into the darkness. The boy stood still for a while, staring at the sky. When he looked around, he did not see any of the werewolves. All that was left was little piles of ashes, together with a coin blinking here and there on the ground. The boy held the dagger in front of his eyes. Along the handle was a tiny inscription in an unknown language. The dagger felt cold.
