Character description
Tony Montana was a Cuban political refugee, and the son of Georgina "Mama Montana" Montana. Arriving via the Mariel boatlift after five years in prison, in Havana, Manny and Tony make their way to America during the Boatlift in 1980. A month after being sent to Freedomtown, a detention camp, Manolo Ribera (Steven Bauer), Tony's best friend, manages to get he, Tony, and an associate Angel Fernandez greencards, and a job washing dishes at a small food stand, by assassinating a former aide to Fidel Castro during a riot. Tony and Manny successfully murder the man, and are released from the camp. They take up their jobs at the food stand soon, but quit the job when they take another job from two Hispanics, to exchange some cocaine for money from "Hector the Toad" and several other Colombians at a hotel. Even though the deal goes awry, Angel Hernandez being killed in the process, Tony manages to grab the cocaine while keeping the drug money. After returning the money and drugs to their boss, they begin working for powerful, yet affable drug kingpin, Frank Lopez. As Tony becomes more and more powerful, making money, growing addicted to cocaine, and doing delas for Frank, Manny and Tony eventually decide to off Lopez, and Manny kills him under Tony's orders. The two take over his empire, Montana promptly marrying Elvira Hancock, Lopez's girlfriend, whom he discussed Frank's assassination with beforehand. The marriage between the two was rocky, marked by vicious, drug-fueled arguments, and Montana's new wife grew to despise him.
The person Montana cared the most for was his sister, Gina (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). He was fiercely overprotective of her, forbidding her to date any men and brutalizing potential boyfriends (it is implied that he even harbored repressed incestuous feelings for her.) She began dating Manny, in secret, terrified of what her brother would do to them if he found out. The couple eventually married; they believed that joining together respectably would win Tony's approval. However, when Tony found them together, he flew into a rage and shot Manny twice, without knowing about the wedding, Gina informing him as she sobs over her lover's corpse.
Earlier, Tony had run into trouble with the law ( tax evasion ), and faces up to three years in prison. Alejandro Sosa, a Bolivian drug-lord who Tony did a drug deal with when he was working for Frank, confronts Tony and informs him that he can make sure he doesn't face any prison time, but only if he supervises the assassination of a journalist who is troubling Sosa and his entire drug operation in Bolivia by revealing him as the drug lord he is.
Planting a car bomb, Tony and the hitman tail the car with a remote-controlled detonator. They are to blow his car up with the explosive in front of the United Nations, though are surprised to see the man's wife and two daughters enter the car with him at his hotel. Tony, now extremely reluctant to continue with the hit, becomes increasingly agitated with the hitman, who refuses to deviate from Sosa's orders, until Tony completely snaps. He, in a cocaine-induced rage, murders the hitman who was supposed to kill the journalist, shouting at his dead body deliriously.
Sosa, in revenge for the sabotage, has a hit-squad sneak into Tony's mansion in the night, shortly after he takes Gina from her home where he had killed Manny moments before. Sosa's henchmen invaded Tony's house, one of them opening fire on who he presumed to be Tony with an Uzi submachine gun, but killed Gina instead. Wild with rage, Tony charged the man and sent him off his balcony into the pool below, dead. Soon, he noticed the Hispanic soldiers Sosa sent to murder him on his surveillance system, and ends his sobbing over Gina's corpse as one of his men bangs on his door, pleading for him to open it. Soon, the man is shot to death, and the soldiers gather in Tony's main hall, four of them in front of his door to rush him. Shouting in his cocaine-induced trance, Tony takes an M16 with a M203 Launcher Attachment from his weapon locker, and blows the door to bits, killing the four men. He then walked to the top of his balcony and opened fire on his would-be assassins, killing many of them on the stairs, and then on the floor. Eventually, he is disarmed, and, under the powerful influence of cocaine, stands at the banister, taunting the men as he jumps around wildly, taking their gunshots seemingly with no pain or even acknowledgment that he is being shot.
However, by this time, Sosa's right-hand man (known as The Skull) had found the grapple hook that Gina's murderer had used to enter Tony's room, and climbed up the balcony with his weapon in hand. As Tony taunted his opponents, taking bullets at the banister, the hit-man approached him from behind, and shot him in the back with his sawed off shotgun. Tony flies off of the balcony, breaking the banister, and lands in the pool below, apparently dead by the water turning a sickening shade of red with his blood. In one final twist of irony, the statue behind Tony's dead body reads "The World Is Yours."
