Vallad, the last of the vampire counts of the old world, blundered through the dense forest. He had blundered through for days, driven from his land. His home burnt to the ground by the Lykens who were pursuing him. There baying howls could be heard on the night air. Suddenly something caught his eye, nestled in the moss covering the forest floor. A bright red ruby. Vallad was drawn to light. It seemed to glow, as if the light was coming from within the ruby itself. He picked up the crystal, drawn to the ruby’s inner radiance. As he gazed into the ruby it grew hot, suddenly flames leapt from the ruby and danced across his cloths and body. As he raised his head to scream he saw the wolves gazing at him from the bushes. They had caught up with the vampire while he stopped to stare at the ruby. The whole pack stood there and watched silently as the flames engulfed the vampire. Burning him from the inside out, purging his tortured soul. All that was left was a charred skeleton still clutching the ruby. Gingerly the pack leader picked up the ruby. It was still warm to the touch. He placed it back within the clasp around his neck. The trap had been set and the vampire driven in. The pack left as silently as they came. Disappearing into the night, looking for the next vampire’s soul to be clamed by the ruby.
