You mean me? When was I turned? Jesus, it makes me sick thinking about it.


Must have been about 15 years ago. I was racing through the fog, bike humming between my legs, feeling the thrill of speed flying through those mountain switch backs. That supercharged feeling. When the cool night air is rushing over you and around you, it’s the closest thing you’ll ever feel to flying.

I’m not sure if you know, but when death flashes before you eyes, you can remember ever f@cking detail, every sight, sound and smell. You remember so clearly that it hurts. You can remember the exact moment the adrenaline kicked in and when you realized you were probably going to die.

The next 30 seconds of my life are burned into my memory with that kind of searing clarity.

Fog was rolling down the mountain side, and was obscuring the bends in the road ahead. To my right the mountains climbed upwards toward heaven, to my left they plummeted down to hell. I downshifted as I approached a sharp turn. After clearing the bend I panicked. There was a girl in the street ahead. She was in the middle of the road hunched over an animal that I supposed had been hit by a car. She seemed to be tending to it. Or… Feeding on it?

That was the beginning of the end for me.

My heart skipped, as I groped for my front brake and the tire began to slide on the dew moist street. I can remember that pine smell of the woods and the cool mountain air as I sucked in fear instead of oxygen. I remember the way the bike shuddered as I stomped on my rear brake pedal. And worst of all, I remember the look in that girls eyes as I struggled to keep the bike upright while racing towards her. She had these cold calm eyes and a little smile on her face.

I did everything I could to keep the bike under control and some how managed to just miss her. I could smell perfume as I rocketed past her. But there’s a funny thing about traveling in straight lines on curvy roads. A second later my bike was impaled on the guard rail. Like a rag doll I found myself screaming through the night air, sailing off and away down the mountainside. I hit a few things on my way to the bottom, tree limbs mostly. Finally I lay coughing blood on a pile of rocks far below.

So you asked me, when was I turned? Well, it must have been right about then, because the life was rushing out of me.

I can’t imagine how she got down to my mangled body so quickly, but there she was. That b!tch, with her girlish little smirk she stood there, head cocked to one side, eyes patronizing with sympathy. She thought she was doing me a favor, making me into a monster.

I’m ashamed now, but when she offered me her blood I drank like I was starved. Like a drunk 10 years sober cracking open a bottle of Jack Daniels. I drank every drop she would give me. And then she was gone.

I never saw her again.

I have spent every night since then searching these woods hoping to repay her kindness to me. I come with an ax and a leather jacket. Hoping wipe that girlish smile from her face once and for all. And to drain the blood I did not drain from her that night. So far, in these hills, all that I’ve found are the dogs. Short of her head, I’m happy to collect theirs instead.

Anyway. That’s how it happened to me. How I died. And yet I lived on.
