In the late 8th century, a threat to the Order of Hermes emerged from Brittany, a district of the Franconian Empire controlled by various Celtic Galician chiefs. There, a previously unknown wizard hailed as ?Damhan? was discovered to possess a new type of magic based on blood sacrifice. Certain rites made it possible for him to produce a pon of vis from the body of a mortal human by killing them in an unknown ritual. News of this discovery spread quickly among the members of the Order and a great debate erupted. Magi belonging to the more aggressive houses wished to gain this knowledge and use it for themselves, but the less ambitious magi foresaw the destruction that might be wrought on the mundane world. Numerous rumors began to circulate throughout the fledgling covenants about the source of Damhan?s powers. The Druids of House Diednae and the Fey-worshippers of House Merinita both made claims that use of this magic would bring the Order to war with the kings of men and signaled the downfall of the Hermetic Order. Unfortunately their wisdom was overshadowed by other magi?s greed for the endless supply of vis that might be squeezed from the blood of mortals. Before the judges of House Quaseitoris could make a decision, a number of bold young magi traveled to Brittany to ask Damhan to join their Order.
Damhan explained to his visitors that he was already a member of the Order by the Latin name Davanalleous and that he had taken the Oath long ago. This perplexed his visitors since they had hoped to use membership in the Order as a bargaining tool. Foolishly, several of the group demanded that he immediately make known the source of his power and that it be shared with other members of their shared Order. He refused them. When confronted with the fact that he had broken his pledge to avoid interaction with mundane society, Damhan scoffed them and proclaimed that not a single member of the Order had been able to live up to that portion of the Oath. One of the magi challenged Damhan to a battle of Certamen. This battle quickly spun out of control and engulfed all the magi present. Of the five magi that had traveled to Brittany, only one escaped to tell the Order of what had transpired.
Damhan?s refusal to share the source of his magic forced the Order of Hermes to act. Followers of House Flambeau, Tytalus and Tremere gathered to oppose the wizard in an all out Wizard?s War. They hoped that after his defeat enough materials could be captured to recreate the experiments he must have conducted to develop his vis producing power. Damhan defeated the Hermetic magi in battle at the great faerie ring of Carnac. Since that catastrophe, the stones of Carnac have been marked as a sacred place to members of the Order and no magi may cast magic at the site. Knowing that the Order would do all in its power to destroy him, Damhan absconded to his homeland of Albany. There the Order had no followers and he could rely on ancient allies to protect and hide him.
The Order of Hermes spent several years preparing for the fight against Damhan-allaidh, though a few magi attempted to challenge him on their own. These magi met their demise at the hands of the wizard, whose spy network had knowledge of where and when the magi reached the highlands. Rumors spread throughout the Order concerning Damhan?s alliance with the old Caledonian Kings that had held the Roman armies at bay more successfully than any other population. The force to destroy him would have to rely on more than just magic; it would require a military force.
