Character description
She was different from the others. One could tell from looks alone. She was dark and swarthy skinned, her siblings blonde cherubs with sparkling blue eyes. Her eyes were a dark amber ringed with the dark green of the forest. To look into her eyes was to look into the forest itself, wild and untamed.
Her mother was a bride of the forest before she entered into the restrictive civilization of the Hamlet. Cassandra hated the land she was now forced to reside in. Her mother's love for a common man had been her undoing. Her mother had been forced from the forest and had dragged her daughter along. She had dragged her daughter into hell on earth.
Cassandra was hated by the village, but none hated her more than her stepfather. He hated her different looks, her strange mannerisms and her connection to the forest. He resented the fact that her mother loved her. Whenever he could he beat Cassandra and cut her with words of anger and pain. The greatest harm he ever caused her was separating her from the forest of her birth, her one love.
She grew into a tall beautiful woman with long raven-black hair and skin the color of light caramel. The villagers called her a Gypsy witch and refused to even look her in the face, for fear of her demon eyes. She grew to disdain everything around her and her greatest goal was to return to the forest, to be a bride, like her mother had been. Before the man ruined everything.
One day she got her chance to return to the forest. Her stepfather came home from the store, where he sold goods to the residents of the Hamlet. He informed Cassandra that he had arranged a marriage for her with the town ruffian. The only man who would willingly take her into his home. Cassandra fought this with words until her stepfather's fist made contact with her jaw. The violence of the act awoke something within her and she lunged.
When her mother returned from gathering herbs she discovered a frightening sight. Cassandra was feasting on her stepfather. When she looked at her mother, she grinned. Her mother looked upon the scene calmly, she had wondered when the spirit of her father would infest Cassandra. She told Cassandra that she loved her, then packed a light bag and ushered Cassandra from the house. Once free, Cassandra ran as far as she could. She ran until she could run no farther. Then she collapsed for the night. She continued like this for days until her soul told her to stop.
She looked around and her heart pounded with joy. She was home! The forest had called her back, she was now its bride and, with her new strength, its protector.
